The Shoot with Livion was part of a stock and gallery shoot I did over the period of a day. The session with Livion lasted just over an hour. On the day I had two assistants. One to handle video, one for lighting and model support. I also had a professional make-up artist. The shoot was done on location in a local guest house. Livion has very neat tattoos and piercings and milky skin so the brief for the MUA was neutral make-up but glamour lips. If the face featured in the shot, I wanted it to attract the attention but mainly we focused on her body. Lighting was with Profoto D1 kits and 3'x4' soft boxes trigger with Profoto Air wireless triggers. We also employed the ever present giant and medium reflectors. Photographic Equipment consisted of a Canon 5DmkII, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II and 50mm f/2.5 Macro. This video shows about 30 minutes of that shoot from a static camera and one roving camera and should give you a fair idea of the the setup. The language spoken in the background is Afrikaans, our native tongue.

Although we did not have a stand this year at the Photo & Film Expo we were none-the-less pretty well represented with various ODP members present at the show either on their own stands (Like Sarel and PhotoWise) or exhibiting their work (Like Mitchell Krog, Living Canvas) or as an ODP brand ambassador (like Luba Nel, running through a Beauty Retouch session in Adobe Photoshop) We also had staff members formally helping out on the Nikon stand and informally helping out at various other stands where products were on display that we have a particular affinity to (Profoto Rocks!) The Model, Bree Knowles (Tarion) was absolutely marvelous with great tone in her body and defined muscle texture. Just a quick tip on high contrast lighting. Most of the time, the fastest
way to get a high key or very contrasty light is to just shoot
“barebulb” This is great, except it really pumps up the contrast, which
means it creates a lot of texture in skin, and shows up every wrinkle
and flaw.Next time, Try using a bit of physics and science to help you out. By lowering the power of your light, you can use the Inverse Law of Light fall-off (go look it up… Google is your friend!) to your advantage. The highlight areas will be correctly lit, but the light fall-off is drastic due to the low power. This causes the dark areas (or shadow areas) but because the light is so big, you get a much softer and flattering light. A Last minute shoot for media content for the 13th Floor Performing arts Ministry, before their Gala Show in Pretoria, South Africa. We set up at about 12pm and completed the shoot at 5pm. Many of the dancers have never danced when they join 13th Floor, and have to develop very, very fast. The good thing is that they are super committed, so they will redo a series or routine over and over and over! We had the wonderful opportunity to shoot a young couple again. After shooting a semi-nude couple a year or two ago, and having limited success with sales, we wanted to try something a little bit more intimate. Shafs is a true professional when it comes to photo shoots so we had no worries in putting her into the frame with a new model, Pieta.
